This is a drawing I did back in school, when I spent RISD Wintersession in Puerto Rico. It's a mixed media piece showing La Perla - a poverty-stricken town nestled at the foot of this 500 year-old fort, El Morro. The juxtaposition of the historical landmark and this cluster of colorful houses is just crazy in real life. I used photocopies of old maps I found in the archives of the Old San Juan Library. This was published in the Puerto Rican newspaper,
El Nuevo Dia.
